🌟 Welcome to My Interactive English Blog!

Hello, everyone!
Today, I am going to explore Receptive Skills Strategies — that means how we understand English when we listen and read. These are the first steps to becoming great English communicators!

In this blog, you will find fun, creative, and inclusive activities that make learning English easy, enjoyable, and meaningful. We will use both traditional tools (like flashcards, stories, and games) and technological tools (like videos, audio clips, and interactive apps).

Let’s get started!

🎧 PART 1: LISTENING – “Who’s Talking?” 🎙️

🎯 Objective:

Students will identify speakers and contexts in short, simple conversations.

🧠 Skills Practiced:

  • Listening for general meaning

  • Identifying who is speaking and the situation

  • Recognizing tone and sound clues

💡 Activity 1: “Mystery Voices”

Designed by: M.Sc. Gabriela Galarza

Description:
Students will listen to short recordings (1 minute each). Each recording has two people talking in everyday situations, like:

  • A student and a teacher

  • A shopkeeper and a customer

  • Two friends at a park

Video and audio:

While listening, students use their Magic Book — a decorated notebook or interactive worksheet — to write down the key words or phrases they hear.

Instructions:

  1. Watch the video carefully. Write in your Magic Book the words or sentences you understand.

  2. Compare your notes with a partner and discuss what the conversation was about.

  3. Listen again to check and add more details.

🪄 Why “Magic Book”?

Because everything you write inside comes to life through your imagination and your learning power! ✨

Instructions:

  1. Listen carefully to the short audio.

  2. Write who is speaking (e.g., teacher and student) and where they are (e.g., at school).

  3. Work in pairs to discuss your answers.

  4. Watch a short video clip of the same dialogue to confirm your guesses.

🎯 Objective:

Students will understand main ideas and infer meaning in short texts.

🧠 Skills Practiced:

  • Scanning for specific information

  • Guessing meaning from context

  • Identifying who is speaking and why

💡 Activity 2: “Emoji Story Challenge”

Designed by: M.Sc. Gabriela Galarza.

Description:
Students read a short story supported by emojis and pictures that help them guess the meaning of new words.

Example Story:
👩‍🎓 Maria wakes up early ⏰. She eats breakfast 🍎 and runs to school 🏫. Her friend Ana says, “You’re late!” 😅

Instructions:

  1. Read the story carefully.

  2. Match each emoji with a word or phrase from the text.

  3. Write 3 sentences about your own morning using emojis.

  4. Share your story on Padlet or Google Classroom.

🎨 Adaptations for Learning Styles:

  • Visual learners: Emoji and image support.

  • Auditory learners: Teacher reads the story aloud or plays a narrated version.

  • Kinesthetic learners: Arrange printed emoji cards to retell the story.

  • Reading/writing learners: Focus on spelling and punctuation when rewriting.

💖 Inclusive Adaptations:

💻 PART 3: TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

🎲 PART 4: WRAP-UP GAME – “Receptive Skills Race” 🏁

🎯 Objective:

Review both listening and reading skills in a playful team activity.

Instructions:

  1. Divide students into 4 groups.

  2. Each round alternates between a listening question and a reading challenge.

  3. Teams get points for correct answers and collaboration.

Example:

  • Listening: “Who is speaking?” (play short clip)

  • Reading: “What is Maria doing in the story?”

🏆 Winning team gets stickers or badges!

💬 Teacher’s Reflection

“I believe that learning happens best when students enjoy, interact, and feel included. These receptive skills activities allow every learner — visual, auditory, kinesthetic, or reading/writing — to shine. By combining traditional and digital tools, we make English learning both playful and powerful.”
